Lightfall moves in...

Post by Lightfall »

Lena sat in the window seat of her room, glowering darkly at at tasseled pillow she'd just thrown at the opposite wall. She knew the pillow didn't deserve it, but she couldn't very well throw the people who did. At least, she really shouldn't. She was in enough trouble as it was.

Her father had caught her yesterday afternoon trying to sneak out to go patrolling with Oby. She'd made one stupid mistake by trying to leave home a few months ago, and now every time she wanted to go somewhere, her parents suspected she was trying to bolt. But she'd be damned if she was going to be the only student kept like a caged sparrow instead of doing regular patrols to strengthen her tactical skills and control. It was bad enough she was behind in all her classes, having been admitted at the start of the second semester instead of the first.

Lena slumped against the window frame and continued her mental rand of reasons she felt sorry for herself, ending finally at the thought that Oby probably thought the worst of her for never having shown up. As soon as he entered her mind, however, she couldn't help but slide from a rant into a daydream.

She and Oby had both started mid-year. Not wanting (or all that welcome, either) to join his older sister's crowd, he had found himself as much outside of all the little groups of students formed at the beginning of the year as Lena did. Inevitably, the two found themselves paired up at everything from science labs to lunch room tables. She liked his straight-forward nature, so unlike the polite and politically correct way she was raised to behave. Besides, with his dark nature, he didn't judge her for the morally ambiguous nature of her mind control abilities. And on top of that, he was so strong and had the most amazing eyes...

A sharp knock sounded on her bedroom door, and her father entered immediately, making the gesture of respect for her privacy pointless. His blue eyes quickly scanned the room and found his little girl sitting cross-legged on the window seat that, not too many years ago, had held a collection of porcelain babydolls. Straightening with authority, he nonetheless remained in the doorway as he began,

"I just got off the phone with the Administrator of Student Housing at SJS, and they will have a room ready for you to move into by the end of the week." She didn't so much as open her mouth to speak, but he continued with, "Now don't try to argue with me. Your mother and I have discussed this, and we feel that the extra discipline and supervision of boarding at the school is the best thing for you right now. But don't bother packing just yet. They'll give you a list of what you're allowed to bring tomorrow at school."

He paused, obviously waiting for tears and objections at having to leave the luxury or home for shared dormitories. But all she said was, "fine. whatever."

He frowned slightly at her sharp tone, but having expected worse, merely nodded and left, leaving the door open behind him.

Lena waited until she could no longer hear her father's footsteps down the hall, then unfolded herself from her place at the window seat and closed the door quietly. Scooping up the previously offensive pillow and hugging it to her chest, she threw herself down on her bed with a huge grin. Finally, she would be included with the other students, instead of always kept apart from everyone.
