Francis sat in the quad in silence. Her fingers still hurt from all the typing the night before. She had sent e-mails to everyone she could think of, everyone she believed she could trust. The fact was she was in desperate need of help and it would take what little social capital she had gained in this strange school to make it work.

The Redcaps would fall and with that, the Cabal would be finished.

Her mother was NOT going to win this time....

Francis straightened and re-buckled the leather that nearly surrounded her entire body. No SJS uniform tonight, no pink hair, not goth makeup. Those were things that bore memories of good and decent things for Francis.

Tonight was not about decent things.

Her leather body suit was black as the hate she bore and her hair was now the color of the Croatoa skies. With that, she launched into the air and headed for Salamanca, her old home town.

She would wait at the Greenline and see who showed up....

Three days before

Karl takes the last of the items he had "procured" from the MAGI vaults onto his bed, spread out like a throphy rack. His method of entry seemed to have been so inspired, he wasn't quite sure why others hadn't done it before him! Of course, he had had some help....

The majority of the items were to be either fenced off to some of Karlof's contacts, or smuggled back to his family. But two items were destined for a different fate.

One was a headpiece to a staff, enscribed with runes now familiar to Karlof. The other; a small, unassuming cross. The cross was three lines instead of two; one long bar and two short on either end. A DeMedici Cross... as requested from him by Francis herself.

Which brought Karl to his current predicament. Francis was one of the few he could count as an equal... a fact that brought him comfort and fear; a cold feeling that griped at his chest.

She was advancing to a point where she might stand in his way one day. Witch Hunters... a profession and practice that had been a bane for the VonMandrakes for centuries. None had come close to true harm to the family, but far too many came onto their trail.

What if Francis one day became his foe? What if by handing over this cross, by acting in the manner Karlof treated his equals, he was spelling his own doom one day?

Sitting in front of his prizes, Karlof finally decided that there was only one choice to make.

*The Morning After*

As Francis sat quietly under the Wingra tree, an odd looking witch's hat in her lap, she found her thoughts drifting. She had gone and faced the Cabal, she had triumphed over something she had never believed she could survive. The spell had been prevented and Mary Macomber had fallen. A tear drifted down Francis' cheek and plopped heavily onto the spiked brim of the hat.

It hadn't been her mother.

The Cabal would have to take time now to recoup what it had lost against the near brigade of SJS students that had crashed the party. Her friends...she smiled. They had all rallied at her timid question and now, for the first time, Francis felt like she had a place in life and it was here at St. Joe's. What was once a rotten place to get transferred for a teenage witch was now the best home she had ever known.

First Mimi had come, then Thunder Cricket had nearly broken down one of Quad 1's walls in her enthusiasm. After that, Misericorde..she blushed...and then her favorite friend Scout, and even Wachabe had come. Then again Wachabe always did jump at the chance to beat people up. She had even seen Sage. He must have seen the e-mail too.

She smiled, Lycia was there too. Ghostly and indistinct but she was there, lending an undead hand from the other side to see the Cabal's plans fail.

But for Francis, her success was tinged whith the feel of defeat. Mary Macomber had not been Mary Cross as she had come to believe, which meant she was still out there somewhere. Francis clutched the hat of Mary Macomber in her fist and lightly fingered the oddly shaped cross around her neck.

Francis placed the battered witch hat on her head, straightened it, and stood up. She would find her...it was just a matter of time. But for now....lunch in the quad with Cricket, Mimi, and Misericorde.

((Yay, Franky!

I had a great time, even with the deaths, and I was happy to see everyone working so well.

I swear, I would run Katie Hannon's taskforce every day. I love it.))
