Laurel grew up in Syracuse, New York, as a relatively normal if somewhat disconnected middle child in a moderately upscale neighborhood. In late 2008, her father’s landscaping business declared bankruptcy, and the resulting financial problems put stress upon his marriage, and in turn upon his children. Laurel’s schoolwork began to suffer, and her attitude went from dreamy to surly. Her mutation triggered during a cafeteria altercation and when all was said and done, three classmates were sent to the hospital with severe burns.

Laurel has a number of small mutations. The most noticeable is her ability to create bursts of flame from her hands. Her internal structure intermittently consumes energy at an enormous rate, and discharges the sooty remains as a form of negative energy particles. This tends to make her appear dirty much of the time. The need to remain well-fed to prevent this process from consuming her own cells and organs causes her to gain and lose weight constantly. The resulting self-image issues contribute to her anger, which in turn seems to help trigger and power the process.
