The Downside of Destiny (Bethany Jordan)

Post by Bethany Jordan »

"What were you thinking? Were you thinking?"

Thomas Jordan paced the floor of his living room, his fingers squeezing the bridge of his nose. His shoes squeaked with each step, and the business suit he wore rustled softly. He was the picture of a man in the prime of his life. A successful businessman with a caring, wonderful wife and two beautiful children who looked poised to follow in their parents' footsteps, Thomas Jordan was living the American dream. And although he didn't look a day over 27, those close to him knew he was already well into his fifties. Life was good for the Jordan household.

And yet before him, slouching on the couch with her arms crossed, sat his young daughter, looking angry at the world. Her jet black hair was tinged with cherry red to match the baggy pants she wore. She didn't look up when her father addressed her, prefering to keep staring at a spot on the wall.

"well, Bethany? What were you thinking?"

"I was thinking I wanted a smoke." The girl's voice was flat, almost uncaring. She glanced at her father's face briefly.

He ran his fingers through his own black hair and took off his glasses. Stopping mid-stride, he turned to Bethany and crossed his own arms. "So you decided it would be best to light up in the locker room? Bethany, those things are bad for you."

The girl scoffed. "Yeah right, Dad." She leaned forward settling her arms on her knees. "You know as well as I do that it's only a matter of time before they don't do a thing to me. Just like you and Mom. God knows you've drilled it into our heads enough."

"Young lady, you will not speak to your father that way." Thomas lifted a finger to point down the hall. "You are grounded until further notice. No phone, no TV, no going out. You go to school and you come home. Oh and..." He opened his hand, palm up towards her. "Give me what's left."

Sneering, Bethany took the beat up pack from a pocket halfway down her jeans and slammed it into her father's hand. She whirled down the hall and stomped to her room, shutting the door with a loud thud. Frustrated, she punched the wall, yelling loudly.

And stopped. Midway up the wall, right where her fist had landed, the paint was bubbled and peeled away, the edges disappearing into ash. Soot blackened the whole area.

--------------------------------------------------------

Bethany Jordan is the twin sister of Brandon Jordan and daughter of Dawn's Early Light and Searing Freedom. As third generation metas, it was understood from a very young age that she and her brother would take up the mantle that their parents and grandparents carry and still carry to this day.

Unlike her brother, Bethany rebeled against this destiny, in every way she could. Rather than feel blessed by her powers and lineage, she felt trapped. Her rebelious tendencies have landed her in a fair amount of hot water over the last couple years, with run-ins with both the authorities of her school and the police. Mostly minor infractions, her parents bailed her out each time, stressing the importance of the duty before her. When both she and her brother displayed their long awaited powers, the Jordans contacted SJS to teach their children the control they need in the hopes that the nuns could handle their daughter's behavior as well.

((OOC Info))
For those of you who have not met any of the Boyd/Jordan family before, they are a group of patriotic superheroes dating back to just after WWII. Their powers are tied to the radioactive nature of their blood and passed down to their children. Among these powers are an accelerated metabolism and a slowed aging proccess. These manifest as regeneration and the ability to "burn off" foreign substances quickly, such as poisons, drugs, or alcohol. Bethany's abilities are nowhere near as advanced as her grandparents or parents but she knows it's only a matter of time. She knows that she's in for a long, probably lonely life, so she intends to make the most of her time before the abilities catch up to her family's.

And I wonder
How long it'll take them
To see my bed is made.
And I wonder
If I was a mistake.
I might have nowhere left to go,
But I know that I cannot go home.
These voices trapped inside my head
Tell me to run before I'm dead.
I've got to run away.

((I15 Update:

Bethany has been at SJS for almost a year now and a lot has happened to her, both good and bad. When she first arrived, she rebelled against authority in just about anyway she could and spent her time making as many "friends" as possible. Within a few short months, she could be connected to about half a dozen guys, but was not obviously dating any. She remained intermittently at odds with her brother, even as he was her closest confidant. In truth, though she would never admit it herself, she was jealous of the attention Brandon would receive from their parents.

In October of last year, after much asking, Beth finally began dating Luke Bartel, her first committed relationship. It was also doomed by the introduction of a new friend, Diego. Bethany found herself spending more and more time with Diego, out on patrol, going to parties or swimming. She found a common bond through their lives being locked into a destiny through the actions of others. She recognized a desire to rebel in Diego and tried to nurture it. However, her own anger and tendency to talk without thinking gradually drove a wedge between them, until she lost him as a person she could talk to about anything.

For months, Beth kept everything going on with her bottled up inside. In January, it all came to a head and in an argument with her brother, she lashed out using her powers. She was horrified at the burn on his face and afraid of what would happen when the authorities found out. She ran, boarding a bus for New York City, where she lived for about six weeks. She worked as a waitress under an assumed name, completely without using her powers. Her first few weeks were uneventful, until one night when her boss's ex showed up, drunk and demanding money. Beth put herself in his path and fired up her hands for the first time in weeks. The man fled without much of a fight and didn't return. A few days later, Brandon and Luke managed to track Beth down and convince her to come home.

Her return was not an easy one however. Strict rules and guidelines were placed on her, by both her family and the school to facilitate her going back to school. She now lives off campus with her grandparents and spends much of her free-time training with her mentors. Her grades have improved, but she is being held back a year from her little excursion. She is working with the school to get moved back into the dorms with the coming semester.

Her relationship with Luke fizzled and died after her return. She is currently dating Joao Rodrigues and can be found hanging out with her best friends Billi and Dar or talking to her brother.))
