The Curious Adventure of Trixie

Post by Extreme Temperature »

Some days it really doesn't pay to be an overachiever in field work. I could have been at Mal's, or eating a pizza, or snoozing in my bed while talking nonsense with my roommates. No, Instead here I was, stuck deep inside a burned out building near Brickstown, probably surrounded by enough Nemesis Jaegers to mince me into itty pieces.

Why you ask? Apparently Freedom Corps had a report of a few strange disappearances, and wanted a few low clearance heroes to check it out before sending in the big dogs. Lucky me ended up checking the leads in bricks..and found somethin alright. Nemesis. lots of them. Apparently checking an old warehouse for something or another.

Okay, don't panic Trixie. Surely theres a good way out of this. Cant get back to the exit, pinned down by a lot of Jaegers and snipers that way. Just what do they want in this place anyhow? I don't think they've used these warehouses since the 70's.

Then i see a couple decorated officer types off a bit further in from my hidey hole. and some weird device, maybe thats whats jamming my calls for help. Well..lets see then..I can either hide here..or try to make a move and risk jaeger filled demise. Lovely choices I got, huh?

Then again..no time like the present, right? And if I dont make a move, they'll find me first, and thats bad.

I start like I usually do, ripping the ground apart with a volley of energy , forming the rocks into a rock golem, which quickly charges into the fray, taking the brunt of the damage. All I need is a distraction to start forming magma and setting off seismic energy, then I got a shot at this. Takes me a bit of work, but the majority of the smallfry troopers scatter once the Golem manages to give their leaders what looks like a nasty concussion. Then the Jaegers come charging in, small and deadly, how in the world does a steam powered thingy come in such a small and evil package?

I pretty much panic at the numbers, barely getting a gout of superheated volcanic gases out in their way to corrode their sensors..or whatever they see with. Golem charges in with a mental command from me, but this is exhausting.
And the numbers..geez..By the time I manage to put them all out of operation, I've got a few nice healthy gashes in my side, it hurts to breathe..I'm pretty sure I'm gonna black out any minute. My golem is barely holding together.,least i'm getting a signal now...Sounds like the other heroes got ambushed by nemesis too.

GIFT and MAGI are mobilizing to get heroes out here to support us, apparently theyre jamming the medbadges too, whatever this was, it was definitely a trap.

Thats when I spot it, a few dossier files sitting on the table nearby. Limping over I notice its some sort of list and a few files on some superheroes, mostly retired ones looks like. Dunno what he wants with retired heros..wait..what?

..Why's there a picture and dossier of DAD?!

Ow, waking up in a hospital is always disorienting..Its the combination of waking up in an unfamiliar place and having people hovering over you. especially when its a couple of agents from GIFT trading angry barbs with your dad.

I can only pick up snippets, but by acting like I'm still asleep a picture starts to form.. a picture that makes me mad.

Then he comes in, smiling at me with his trademark grin, "You can stop faking, princess. They've gone for now". All I can manage is a huff as I open my eyes and eye him.

"Y'now dad, you could have TOLD me. You know its been my life goal for forever to be a superhero. Why didnt you tell me You were one. and Furthermore, just why is the Nemesis Army out for your head and -" I wince as a wave of nauseau rips though me..Guess I must be more banged up than I thought I was, all i can manage more is a weak question , "Do my schoolmates know I'm laid up with an injury or three?"

That loving yet confident smirk again "The school's been notified. Its mostly superficial damage , but a couple of the cuts bled pretty bad and needed some stitches". He shifts uncomfortably, "and I retired from the hero racket years ago..didnt say nothin bout it because, I didnt want you gallivanting off halfcocked to solve problems I didnt quite..resolve"

Wait, what? That wasnt exactly the response I was wanting. "Whaddya mean, dad?"

He just shushes me with a finger and fluffs the pillow a little "shh, just sleep for now hon. I'll explain when you wake up"

Its been.. a very long day. My dad just finished explaining well..This might take a while to explain. I'm not even sure I completely believe him..

Apparently in the early 80's, My dad was 23 or so, and a bit of a dorky slacker, apparently a lot like me. Go figure. S'when he met my mom, she was apparently a grad student at the time in theoretical physics, they met the day a contingent of Nemesis troopers attacked the lab. In one of those all too common Paragon City accidents, dad got bathed in some unstable chemical additives that made him stronger and faster. So of course the nut donned a fedora and took after the whole Indiana Jones motif, calling himself The Gentleman Adventurer.

They were still after mom , she had some theorem on the basis and construction of a machine that allowed ambient temperatures to be controlled. No was definitely not the answer they were willing to take on this one. He spent the next few years alternately fighting them along with a few other guys empowered in similar accidents that day, and courting mom. After they finally foiled the plan for good by arresting the local commanders for his army, Dad's powers had largely pooped out from overuse so he and mom changed their names and settled down to raise a family.

Unsuprisingly every one of the heroes called out and ambushed was one of the kids of those heroes. Guess nemesis wants payback for the foiling of one of his schemes. But why go about it in such a straightforward way? Doesnt really seem like the average nemesis plot, way too amateur.

Still hurts to move..Dad says I'll be laid up for about a week till the stitches heal. Some sorta neurotoxin in the blades designed for specific use on the ambushees... Guess my healing powers dont work for now..I tried to use em..but I can barely get a flame to go. Damn. Dad says safest place for me is campus, and the GIFT types agree. So at least I'll be able to bitch about my injuries in my own bed.. Dad says he doesnt have much of his powers left..but just in case he's getting him and mom to a safer living space at Freedom Corps for now, where mom works.

What a day.

*Early Tuesday Morning*

Its Tuesday.

I'm a banged up Mess. Lovely. To compound my troubles I just found out Dad went off on his own to check something at his old hangouts..and never checked back in. So here I am, against doctors orders, near powerless, and sneaking my way back to our house to root through any clues as to where he went. So far? Nothing. Lots of photos. Mom, his friends, diary entries..Nothing thats a clue..

But Its quite enlightening, at least. Seems that after mom theorized that device, she actually did invent it. The function apparently allowed it to either absorb or project heat, but it couldn't actually create it. It simply absorbed heat to cause freezing, and released it to heat things. Guess nemesis figured he could use it for some nefarious purpose, so mom and dad dismantled the device soon after she completed it.

Thats when I notice it..a small scrap of paper, listing an address. Checking Mapquest I figure out its somewhere in Crey's folly. Goodie...what a fun place.

*some time later that morning*

Its dark. Its quiet outside. And I dont like the smell of this place. Nobody's around, not even beggars or smallfry crooks, I smell a setup. Careful has gotta be the word of the day, being powerless and alll..course, silly me is so busy being careful, i dont even notice them coming up behind me.

And thats how I ended up tied up, in the middle of this warehouse, with dad nearby and tied up as well. And some retard in nemesis armor glaring at us both.

"Hah, though you could hide for all those years, did you?", sneered the soldier.

"Well, it worked up until recently", my dad smirks, before being hit with the blunt end of a rifle. Man that pisses me off, but even then I can barely get a flame..damn!

"Don't even try, child. The toxin's drained most of your powers from you..Besides, its obvious you dont even understand how they work, thats why the toxin worked so deliciously well" another sick grin, and what the hell does he mean, anyhow?

"Trixie dear, Meet dad's old archrival. Major Tiralleur Hoskins..He used to room with me at college..Then when he flunked out of his studies nemesis offered him some money for research if he proved useful..so he sold information about Mom's device to them, for a juicy promotion.", my dad grunted as he finished, eying his old roomie.

"Just like old Times, isnt it Trevor? except I see you indeed lived the hero lifestyle. you really should thank me. Got the girl, had a strikingly beautiful little girl, and to boot she even has powers beyond your dreams and that carry on her mother's research", he pauses, waiting for my obviously confused reaction, then grins" Oh..so you really dont know, do you? Pity...If you understood your powers you just might be able to save your father. As it is..Its time I settled a score I've had with him for a long time"

Wait, what? Suprise turns to dread as he starts to point the rifle, first at my dads face..then he swings it at me. Oh crap. I only have a second more to comprehend what he's about to do , before my dad screams and the gun fires.

Well. This is bad, mere moments to live, no powers, no way to dodge, and no hope. Really didn't expect it to end like this, Gotta be something I havent thought of, Think Trixie, You've survived worse than this..with powers though, but they don't work.. Unless..

My mind starts reviewing the last couple days, I suppose in a way its my life flashing before my eyes, not that I wanna think about that..but that paper on moms research..its gives me an idea. a Crazy, insane, last ditch, desperate idea. And so..Instead of willing heat to flow out of me with that familiar feeling..I try desperately to somehow use my powers in reverse. Draw heat from the air, if you will.

The Crazy thing is..It works. I open my eyes to find dad's rival screaming, the bullet is mere inches from my face, encased in a thick layer of frost, whats more, my injuries seem to be knitting up at a highly accelerated rate, drawing all that energy in must be supercharging my systems. Wait, so if I can absorb heat..no wonder I liked hot things..I was probably unconsciously recharging without even realizing it.

The ice breaks, and I land with a smirk. "Alright. My turn. Time for a little revenge for trying to screw with my family."

"Thats not possible..the toxin should have taken days more for your system to adapt to, even if you figured out the source of your enemy", he growls, eyes brimming with rage

"yeah, well, obviously you didnt learn well from out past encounters, bud...she's a carnegie, we always adapt faster than what you nuts expect us to", dad smirks

Time to borrow an idea from Tam, I think. I concentrate, absorbing more heat energy until my body is covered in a thick layer of protective ice, smirking from my new armor as I rip the floor apart to create a golem, sending him charging at the retreating villain while his jaeger troopers charge at me, straight into my volcanic gas attacks.

This time I dont intend to get cut, and within minutes I crush the jaegers with magma sculptures, before burning the ropes off dad. "sorry dad, I'd stay and chat, but I got an arrest badge with his name on it"

Dad just smirks, popping a couple knuckles and stretching. "Race you to him"

And then I watch my dad charge off at superspeed. Y'now, I'm getting real sick of him lying about his powers. Sigh. Nothing to do but get airborne and head after them.

Update, final report by Longbow to GIFT on status of Trixie Carnegie case

Subject's powers have been restored following the incident with Nemesis kidnapping her father. Subject also given multiple detentions as a disciplinary action for leaving while depowered, as well as being having multiple examinations to make sure the toxin agent employed by Nemesis is gone. Other ambush victims are also recovering, mostly at slow rates, though a few other cases of highly accelerated healing have been reported.

According to her and her father, cornfimed as Trevor Carnegie, superhero name The Gentleman Adventurer, they pursued the man responsible for the attack, but lost sight of him when he dived into a sewer grate and ran into the area known as the Abandoned sewers. Wisely, they chose not to follow.

Diary entry for Trixie, Monday, July 21st

Sigh. So the bastard's gone underground..in a literal and figurative way. Stupid Alex and her puns, now she's got me doing it. Afterwards the incident I asked my dad on what really happened to his powers. He finally confessed, I hope, that his powers are largely intact, he simply wanted out of the hero biz to raise a kid. Thanks dad..coulda mentioned that before I panicked and discovered ice powers.

In other news, school's going slightly better with Mal tutoring me, I might actually get decent grades for once. To top the week off..had a string of incidents with Council Empire and regular Council over the weekend..fought so many the numbers of werewolves I saw are starting to blur together. On the upside I've been upgraded to a full shiny Security Level 50 License, and can pretty much help out with any hero operation I want to now. Still..I get the feeling I havent seen the last of dad's rival..Guess all I can do about it is train harder, get good grades, and be ready for a fight.

Class time, signing off for now.
