i've talked about the idea a couple of times with a couple of people, having a real life rag/newspaper thing.
problem is submissions of course. somebody would actually have to be in charge of it and then run around making people write stuff for it. Summer did an interview of Jade Rooster for example and i thought that worked out really well. an advice column, a "seen about town" column, an "events" column and somebody ranting about the state of the cafeteria.... but yeah, who's gonna do the work and be the editor-in-chief?

I'll look into it, and see if there is a good format I could use to make something look "newspaper'ish", lol.
If I can find something good, I would be intrested in trying to get this off the ground. I would like the paper to be completely IC. Here are some of the idea's I would try to rotate within the editions...
- Student Spotlight: Basically an interview with a student from SJS. Something informal to talk about likes, dislikes, future ambitions, etc.
- Advice: People could send in letters to the writer about thier IC issues, relationship problems (IC or Fiction), and get the old "Dear Abby" treatment.
- School Events: Anything from Sports (Game recaps, Etc), TF events (worded IC), or anything else that may be applicable. This could be used to build a base for RP or Fiction.
- Student Council News: If the Council has anything they want to get out.
- Editorial: A basic IC article about something pertaining to SJS. Some of the more controvertial subjects would be covered here (Noah is pretty opinionated).
Any other suggestions are welcome. I'm sure I can come up with more bits and pieces. We could ask for volunteers to be "Reporters". One to cover each subject (Spotlight, Events, Advice, maybe even a Gossip Column).
Any thoughts?

i can make the format, no worries there. talk to me if this gets off the ground and my people will do lunch with your people and we'll do the work while they get fat.Double-Cross wrote:I'll look into it, and see if there is a good format I could use to make something look "newspaper'ish", lol.
just a note that Student Council is entirely an out of character body. they don't have anything to say in an IC newspaper since their .. uh, pronouncements are for the supergroup, not the school.Student Council News: If the Council has anything they want to get out.

Cool. Thanks Stasi
Well, the first thing is to agree on the topics, and get a concrete list. Then we can put out the call to arms, and see if we have any reporters willing to cover the beat.
So tell me which of the topics I listed you would like to see, not like to see, and anything inbetween.
Mimi and anyone else, please feel free to chime in here. Afterall, it's your paper.

Well, let's see. What would I like to see in The Flier?
I think I'd like to see The Flier be a good way to write some good immersion pieces without it having to be straightforward "fiction". And what I mean by that is that we can have things like sporting results.
Instead of having to write a whole fiction piece ("...Jerry passed the ball. It flew high into the air...") it can be a fictional report ("Led by the offensive juggernaut of Jerry Smith, the Flyers trounced the Poughkeepsie Polecats 7-2!") that wouldn't drain the muse so much, but can still be a topic for in-game RP and discussion.
Similarly, "interviews" might be a great way to add depth to NPCs, as well as keep PCs interesting and active.
A weekly meal menu would be a simple way to add a dimension to perpetual discussions of bad food.
People could write IC reviews of school events and parties, post screenshots as "candids" or whatever.
What *don't* I want to see? Well, hmm.
I don't want to see "How I beat Tyrant" by Billy Everyteen or any other article about how a student participated in an in-game storyline. We've all arrested Frostfire, so an article about arresting Frostfire would be inappropriate (though an article about revolving-door justice system of Paragon would be a nice tongue-in-cheek article).
I wouldn't want the Flier to be a source of arguments, either: I wouldn't want to see people arguing in game about whether we ate mashed potatoes or broccoli on Monday, for instance
I'd also suggest that there be a small group of "regular" articles, and then lots of space for people to submit special articles they write them. I don't think we should rely on people contributing every week, but I think there should be space for them to do so when they want to.

Re: School news paper
At a recent OH, I brought up reviving The Flyer. I am in the process of coming up with a good format and means to post. However, I need a staff. One person can't cover all the events that take place at school. I figure a good a place as any for the staff to meet would be after OH. While we are there we can gather ideas, brainstorm, and see what good stories we can come up with. Anyone who is interested in joining The Flyer Staff, please contact me and let's make something happen!
