The Athletic Center

Post by Mimi »

Help!

I am writing a piece that includes the athletic center, and it needs a name and a short history. I am tired of just calling it "the athletic center."

Anyone feeling creative? Is it a memorial building, a donated building, what?

Help!

As my old high school called it the B Bulding XD, but we all just called it the gym. But if its anything liek ours was (locker rooms, bathrooms, showers, classrooms, Equiptment toom, Systomatics room, wresaling room, Multi purpous Arena ect. ) it sould be theamed.

The building can be an extention like a donated building,

If it constructed like poste Ritiki invation id assume it would be a cheep steel structure like a hanger kind of building. retractable backetball nets making room for other games like vollyball wesatling other indoor sports and the bleachers can be retracted into the walls as well.

Still the same concept but built with more brick and morter in mind.

As for the name you can mention that its like "Flyers Nest" Or "The Flyer Arena" "St.Joe's Athletic Center" "The Temple" =\ something like that.

Make it donated and a memorial.

Shatter Strike died in the Rikti War. Shatter Strike, real name Dwayne Gerrick, was an alumnus of SJS. His widow, a wealthy lawyer he had met and married at college, donated funds to rebuild the athletic center in his memory. When he attended SJS, he was the star member of the track and field team, excelling in the 100 yard dash. He had energy-based blaster powers.

The athletic center is thusly named, The Dwayne Gerrick Memorial Athletic Center. Nobody calls it that though, because it's a mouthful. Most people call it just "the athletic center" or, if they're feeling ambitious, the "Gerrick athletic center".

I don't like "Flyer's Nest" or "Aerie" for SJS because they both refer to birds. We're the Flyers because of the sacrifice made by a student who flew during the Rikti war. Unless our mascot happens to be an eagle or something, bird-related names don't seem to fit too well.

Do we have a mascot? If not, we might consider retroactively adopting one. If we picked a bird of some sort, then those names would work.

Sigh... None of you have read the website in detail, have you? For shame, for shame ;P

We're actually the Flyers because Saint Joseph of Cupertino could fly.

Until some time during the 1980s, the team was actually still the Saint Joseph School Flying Friars. It was subsequently changed to just the Flyers.

The memorial sounds cool. But isn't Shatter Strike an X-Man? I wouldn't want us to run afoul of Marvel Comics ;P

Then "The Temple" is probably the way to go

A) St. Joe was also quite possibly mentally disabled, but Mimi is spot on.

B) Shatterstar was one of the anatomically hyper-distorted X-men created by Jim Lee. Jim Lee liked to add muscles where humans don't have muscles. Six-packs became Eight-Packs and sometimes Twelve-Packs.

C) Although I TOTALLY agree with the Gym having a name and being donated, I sure hope we don't have to name everything. Although, the "Misericorde Memorial Broom Closet" does have a nice ring to it. my suggestion is to have it be donated by the rich parents of a kid who died during the Rikti war. Perhaps the child was slated to attend and never made it due to the Rikti attacks.

Cathedral Sports Annex, because it sits atop where a cathedral stood, before the Rikti invasion?

I read! I just have a short-term memory. I could have sworn I read somewhere that we were named Flyers in relation to the student who died, that the Wingra tree was planted for? Eh. I dunno. *shrug*

I originally used Shatter Star until I did a google on the name and got all sorts of X-Men results. Heh. If someone has a better hero name, I won't mind seeing it changed. Or change anything else, or even discard it, for that matter. It was just an idea.

Is anyone familiar with real-world Catholic schools? Would they really refer to a sports center as Temple or Cathedral? Seems kinda, I dunno, weird to me. But I've never been to a Catholic school. :)

For that matter, would a Catholic school name a building after a hero? Or would that be glorifying a person too much? Maybe they'd insist on a saint. "Saint Bertha Athletic Center"?

it seems to me that a private school needing to name this "sports center" would go the simplist route and do (insert dead dude/chick here) Memoral Gymnasium. a sports center would be something huge and i just don't see st. joes as the type of place to spend tens of millions on a full out gym.

Catholic schools I've visited call it a gymnasium or sports hall. Much like any other school.

They definitely wouldn't call it a temple or cathedral. Those words are already used to describe a different kind of building.

It's time for you to come out of the closet now, Mis. Seriously.
Eric has a good point, in that with many schools like this, buildings, or more to the point, the funds to construct them, are donated by people, and are thus typically named for the donor(s). The school where my mom works is a private Episcopal boarding school, and everything on campus has someone's name on it.
High school students being what they are, though, they often find their own nicknames for such places. For example, if it were to be the Gerrick Athletic Center, it might simply be called the GAC (gack!).
