Practicing for the tryout (Open)

Post by Kris O'Sullivan »

Kris had gone to the trouble of getting an outfit that looked similar to a cheer uniform for SJS, and was practicing in the gym. As it was way after hours, she had little to worry about, and had plenty of free space to move around in, and not feel the world crash in on her. Trying out for the cheer squad was turning out to be harder than she had ever imagined. Music from DJ Rhetoric and the Retro Beat Squad thumped in its drum & bass heavy style, to provide the red head with the feeling she needed to become immersed in her practice.

Get ready, to go!
Get ready, to fly!
Get ready, ready, to fly!
Let's go! Let’s fly!
Get ready, ready, to win!

As she chanted, Kris practiced the moves she had been researching in videos and on the web. It helped that Coach Waters had given her the names of a few cheersquad coaches, out in town to give her some pointers. She took each one of their conversations to heart, not crooking her elbows, keeping her wrists inline with her arms, and staying sharp in her movements. All of those things, combined with the beat heavy techno washed her nerves to a mild roar.

Flyers fans, in the stands, let's make some noise!
Hey!
Let's fire it up!
Say hey!
Let's fire it up!
Ignite!
Explode!
The Flyer team is dynamite!

Letting herself get carried away, she smiled really big, and cheered on athletes who weren't there. Or at least they were just in her mind, she thought. It felt good to not be the brain trust with answers to test questions, or an easy "A" for people too lazy to do their homework.

Well... She thought she was alone...

Kali waits quietly just outside the door. She hadnt meant to walk up on Kris. She hadnt thought anyone would even be here this time of day.
Bopping her head to the music she watches Kris with a smile.
" Shes really good" Kali thinks to herself.

As Kris's Cheer ended Kali steps foreward clapping.
" That was so cool Kris! Sorry didnt mean to sneak up on you.... since you're already here though, would you mind telling me what you think of mine ? Maybe between us both we can have both our try outs perfected before franky and Jas see them! "

Kris blushes lightly as she agrees to watch and Kali steps to the small stereo and pops a cd in.
Its a mix of the current top 40. Stuff she normally wouldnt listen to but she was told was good for cheers and dances.

As the cd begins Kali takes her place in the center of the gym floor. Hands behind her back, and her feet shoulder width apart.
As her body follows the music , she loses some of the rigid stance while still keeping her feet angeled and begins the chant , her voice loud and clear.

You might be good at basketball

You might be good at track

She lunges foreward one leg slightly bent as the other remains stationary. Her arms come straight foreward , as if pointing at some unseen players on the bench.

But when it comes to football

You might as well step back

She cocks her head to the side , flinging the long ebony colored hair with a smirk on her face. as she jumps back a step.

Might as well step back

Say what?

A hand comes up by her ear and her expression changes to a forced look of confusion as if she is mocking the would be listeners

You might as well step back.

Again her arms come foreward and then sweep back as if moving an unwanted object away.

Can't hear you !!!

Her voice raises , loud and clear echoing through the nearly empty gymnasium as her onyx eyes look foreward.

Might as well step back!

Again she jumps this time foreward , both feet together , landing slightly off her starting point. Her hands on her hips . She spreads her arms to the side slowly forming an upside down V and twists her upper body to the side. As she raises her arms high in the V above her head , she jumps with the twist

Go Flyers!!!

Arms straight above her now then brought down directly in front of her and pulled back up to meet together in front of her chest.

Smiling at Kris as she pulls the strands of loose hair from her face she says " Ok so tell me what i need to change!"

"Okay," Kali said as she pulled at some loose strands of hair and smiling. "So, tell me what I need to change!"

Kris blinked a few times, feeling the scared and gut wrenching fear of failure attempt to swallow her. Kali was so much prettier than she was, and her spots seemed to make her look more like a mutant high school cheerleader. What the hell was she trying out for the squad for, if she had to compete with the likes of Kali, Cricket, or Stasis? Swallowing, she thought about her friends, and which ones had the right answer to this situation.

"POW," Lish's words drifted in, from the depths of memory, and she felt her confidence returning. Smiling she looked to Kali and thought of Stasis, then of Mis, and how they got in, together. Teamwork! That was what it was all about!

"Well," she started. "If you won't take it the wrong way, I think I could point out one major flaw. You need a partner!"

Smiling big as a sparkle of excitement glimmers from her ebony eyes , Kali grabs Kris's hands and jumps up and down a sec .
" Oh MyGawd thats a great idea! This is going to be so much fun!" Kali squeals .
Things are changing so much for her lately. People talk to her all the time. No longer can she slink through the halls to class without being seen.
This is what she wanted right?
Looking at Kris for a second her facial expression changes to a more somber one.
" hey Kris...." she begins, " you think maybe while we are practicing for this maybe me and you could hang out for pizza or something? We really havent goten to talk much lately"

Oby stood leaning against the doorway, watching the end of Kali's routine, smiling. Then felt a bit embarassed by overhearing the two girls talking. He cleared his throat to let them know he was there.

The girls jumped, and look over to see the stone skinned boy leaning, hair still wet from showering after football practice. He grinned as Kali came over to give him a big hug.

"Sorry about that Kris, someone told me that this one'd be over this way, so I figured I'd catch up with her." He kept an arm snugged around Kali's waist, and saw Kris start to deflate a bit. "Anyway, you two are going to need some time here to practice. Trust me, I understand about practice. Coach Waters is killin' us." He smiled and looked at Kris with an arched brow, "But if you think you'll get out of joining Kali for pizza, and think I won't be there too? You've got another thing coming." He winked at Kali. "Pretty sure Lightfall'd come too, if you asked her nice."

" Well of course Lightfall would be invited! Can't be without my sidekick now can I? Kalis smiles and winks.
" Hey Kris? Maybe Arrow can come too?, We could do a group outing maybe! Pizza and a movie or something fun like that? "

The excitement is returning to Kali as she talks.
Hugging Oby tight , she waits for Kris's answer.

Kris, caught very offguard, cocked her head. She looked as though she were deep in thought. It was so hard to get used to hearing and seeing this. In some respects, Kris was a little put off by it, but, there was a lot she didn't know about things, and how people worked. Maybe this would be one of those learning experiences.

"Arrow? I- I can ask," she replied. "He's been busy with the Yeoman's League thing. All that archery stuff... But, either way, Kali, you have alot to tell me. The guy in the government said I couldn't get that info. Something about other priority stuff jamming their in and out boxes."

Kris stood there for a second, feeling awkwardness creep over her, with Kali and Oby being intimately close, in front of her. She suddenly felt like she had been put in her place for every ime she had teased Arrow, early on in the relationship. Looking down and away, she walked back over to the radio, and began looking through cd's.

This didn't feel right to her. She wasn't angry. She just felt like it wasn't good. Oby had a girlfriend in Lightfall, but he made it sound as if Kali had replaced her in the level of importance. And, Kali had even called the girl who had been there first her sidekick. The redhead knew her boundaries, now. She knew what she could and couldn't do, and that was certainly one of them. In the recesses of her mind, she felt pity, but wasn't sure exactly who it was for. She covered her discomfort with browsing the cd's, until she found something she liked. An old seventies funk favorite, A Fifth Of Beethoven.

"So, we will be spending time at the pizza place," Kris said as she turned on the music, and closed her eyes, so she could dance without people watching her in her mind's eye. "I'm good with anything but sundried tomatoes or anchovies."

Sensing Kris's uneasiness Kali backs away from Oby.
A look of confussion in her dark eyes.

She had never felt Kris be uneasy around her before and she wasn't sure how to handle it now.

" Umm .. Oby? I'll catch up later ok? I think me and Kris should work on what we want to do for a routine. I'll let You know what day we pick to go for pizza later" Kali says with an uneasy smile.

" Alright Kali I'll catch You later then " He smiles and gives both girls a wave as he departs the gym.

People were so judgemental of things they had no clue about she thinks to herself. Rather than ask the person they chose thier beliefs and passed judgement .
This one part of her powers Kali never had liked. The ability to pick up on others emotions.
Her excitment now had dwindled. At least for now and in the back of her mind she thinks maybe coming was a mistake. Maybe she should have left when she saw Kris and let the pretty redhead have her own time alone.

" Hey Kris? Ummm .. like I really would like for us to talk sometime. I mean when you feel like it or something. I dont mind if its just me and you and soda machine if thats where you wanna meet. Just let me know a time and place and Ill be there ok?"
Kali tries to hide the hurt she feels as she continues before Kris can answer.
" i need to go catch up on some homework and stuff.... get ahold of me soon and let me know ok? " She grabs her things and rushes from the Gym back towards the quiet solitude of her dorm room.

As Kali pulled away from him, he looked over to Kris as it dawned on him. Kris was uncomfortable because of the hug. He sighed a bit, and realized it probably was to be expected. He'd grown up in an environment where it was okay to express feelings towards friends with a close hug or quick smooch. His family's French roots held true in that regard. Lightfall was much the same way. Kris just wasn't used to that kind of closeness between friends, he supposed.

He laughed a bit at Kali calling Lightfall her sidekick. It was pretty much true. She and Lightfall spent a lot of time together now, even stopping in the middle of their patrols to shop, of all things! Right before the dance, Kali had taken on Lightfall as a sidekick, or Lightfall had had Kali as her Exemplar so that Light could get an SL high enough to get an Icon token to get her dance dress. All in all, he was happy that Lightfall had found such a good friend in Kali, and glad that Kali and he could be close friends too.

He looked back at Kris, "Yeah, we'll all grab some grub, invite other friends along too if you like." He stopped before leaving completely, walked over and gave her a big hug, "You need to not hide yourself away so much. There's patrolling to do." He smiled and walked away letting them get back to practice.

Oby left. Kris felt both relieved and guilty. Why did she have to be like this? She had thought she would be more cosmopolitan than this, and would be accepting of it, after she had talked about it with Oby. But, she was wrong.

She felt like she had let the three of them down, and it chipped away at her self-image just a little more. That's all it had been, at first, after she had gotten back. Just one let down of other people after another. With the occaisional uplifting help, to keep her in the game. She had to get this right. If she was going to be a heroine, she had to get it right. She just had to.

"I need to go catch up on some homework and stuff.... Get ahold of me soon and let me know ok," Kali asked as she grabbed her things and rushed from the Gym.

"Dammit," Kris cursed, after Kali left. "Why? Why did I have to do this? Ready or not, Kali. Here I come."

The redhead had become familiar enough with Kali to use her powers to lock onto the brunette's mental patterns, instead of using the HUD that was interlaced into her contacts by Hero Corps. Kali had gone back to the dorms. She hoped and prayed to the Saints and Apostles that it would just be the two of them. Flying up to the door, Kris knocked. Her heart was in her throat. She so didn't want to lose another friendship.

Sitting on her bed with her knees pulled up to her chin ,Kali hasnt been in the dorm long when theres a knock.
She grabs a tissue and quickly calls out , " Just a second Ill be right there"
Hurrying to wipe the remaining tears she tries hard to regain a smile or at least a comfortable look as she opens the door.

" Oh hi Kris... Im sorry I wasnt expecting so soon... c'mon in . " She opens the door and steps back.
" Give me just a sec ok? I had an eyelash in my eye I just need a sec to rinse it and Ill be right with You"

Kris steps in and Kali heads for the small bathroom . She rinses her face quickly , looking to the mirror and quickly patting the dampness off with a towel and returns to Kris. The forced smile is back. She had lost it for awhile for real ones but today it was back.

Kali sits on the bed and pats a spot nearby.
" Have a seat Kris" she smiles and waits

Kris sat down and looked around. It was odd how the room looked diferent with the occupants being changed. There was no hiding from it, though. She was truly sorry for not being what she was supposed to be.

"Kali," she said, letting her emotions show on her face, and not using the buffers she had been taught to build. "I'm sorry for all of that. I thought I could be sophisticated enough to handle something like that. But, I couldn't. I'm sorry that I can't understand it in my heart. *gestures to her chest* But, I do understand it here. *gestures to her head* I just wish I could be right, and it be all okay. I mean... I saw you two, and all I could think was Angel, Karl, and Nieves."

Kris stood up, her emotions were becoming tangled and confused, and even a bit hurt with herself over not being able to maintain her cool.

"I'm sorry Kali. I just came to make it better, and am not helping at all..."

As Kali listens to Kris her emotions change rapidly and she works hard to keep a handle on them.

She listens to what Kris has to say before snapping back at the red haired girl she ahs always treated with respect.

" Kris, I have never done anything to make you uncomfortable I was aware of. I have always tried to be your friend and if a little thing like a hug is going to set you off then maybe You and I partnering up isnt such a good idea after all. Im sorry if thats brash but for gawd sakes I have hugged You even when parting ways... I have hugged almost everyone Im friends with. I think maybe Ill go for cheersquad on my own. However if You would still like to hang out sometime Im open to that. Maybe a few lunch dates or something will make You more at ease around me again."

Kali again pulls her knees up , wrapping her arms around them tightly.

She watches the expression on the other girls face and thinks to herself how funny some people can be . Soemtimes all it takes to understand someone is to take the time to get to know them.

"Are you drawing a line over this, Kali," Kris asked, her darker, more agressive side showing itself. "I'm not some silly little airhead who stays burried in a book. That was an arm around the waste for longer than a hug. Don't you dare patronize me like everyone else does. I am an empath, too, remember? And if you don't want to be my partner because I'm honest with you, then lunch is probably a no go, too."

She bit back the tears that seemed insistent on coming, then hurriedly left the room.

Kris found herself back in the gym. She just stared at the boombox for a few moments, before finally pressing play, and resuming practice. It wasn't long before the redhead was lost in her practice again, with her imaginary audience.

Remembering that one of the coaches emphasized chants, she worked on those, until she felt her throat tighten a little, then sat on the bleachers. Reaching over, she replaced the cd with a classical music one, and was dismayed that it was a tender, almost sad piece. Why did it have to go like that? She adored Kali. She had always waited for Kali to pick her, but when it did, it all went to hell.

Why was it such a stretch that a Catholic girl, a good one on top of that, be attending classes at a catholic school? Why did she have to get such flack for being a person of conviction and faith? It was probably true that the question could be turned right back around on her, but it wasn't like she was attending a secular, public school. It was a catholic one!
