Cali in the Summer time

Post by Glowing Vigilance »

Summer hoisted her duffle bag over her shoulder. She was excited and anxious but underneath her cool gaze laid a hidden fear. She was rarely scared and some of the things she was scared of were meant for comical relief in the face of a bad situation to lighten the mood of the matter. Summer took one last look at her dorm, her computer was shut off, her newspaper inspiration was all but extinct and she really wished it’d come back to her one day. She ran off a mental check list of things she needed, all her toiletries, a spare set of clothes, another pair of shoes. She bit her lower lip and looked around her dorm which looked like a bombed out house one more time.

“Summer, you didn’t forget anything…” She told herself, “Yes you did, you must’ve forgotten something...”

She slammed the door arguing internally with herself all the way the down the hall and to the left. Summer scratched the back of her head wondering if that stupid nagging feeling that she left out one thing in her bag would leave her the hell alone so she could enjoy herself on this trip with Lei. Crying out loud, this whole trip was the screwiest thing she’d even said yes too. She didn’t know Lei or her family well enough. Lei was all smiles and Summer, though extremely happy to see her smile, was worried. Even with all of Lei’s positive pushes on how understanding they’d be, Summer had learned that even the saintly can sometimes be colder than Stasis in the artic. The bad memories of all those dirty looks and all those lovely messages in her locker from people who didn’t see gay people as having rights equal to them were floating in front of her, reminding her that despite her normal appearance, her decision was still going to affect every aspect of her life, no matter where she went and who she knew.

Lei said she’d meet Summer at Paragon City Airport and she of course agreed. Lei got around in a much easier manner than Summer could. Teleporting her full mass, Lei could just appear and that was that. Summer had to actually exert herself, at high speed of course. She raced through the streets, her duffle back over her shoulder, creating more than its fair share of drag slowing Summer’s hasty progress down the streets of Paragon weaving in and out of traffic like a thread to the eye of a needle. The speed of course still helped her make good time. Her flight to San Francisco wasn’t going to leave until 5 P.M. and it was a quarter till 4 which gave her plenty of time.

She arrived with slow down in her pace going to a walk. To the average eye, a long streak formed into a small 16 year old girl with a hefty looking bag over her back. She’d been in airports before, except they had spider soldiers and the like around the entrances and it looked like a concentration camp more than a gather spot. Paragon Airport was much more calm, no spires of doom, no guards with ultra high powered pulse rifles, no spiders 7 foot high and of course no Hail Recluse posters on the freaking walls. No, this air port was calm, even with all the hustle and bustle. Tope walls, with light sky blue wallpaper gave off the feeling of being in a baby’s room. The people moved back and forth, the ticket holders were doing their moving and their talking in the security lines which seemed like the lines outside of Grandville of the weary refugees trying to get into the giant webbed city.

“Summer!” said Lei from behind her.

Her memories splintered and she turned around and smiled at her girlfriend. She couldn’t help but smile. Life was good. Least for now it was good. She didn’t know what the hell might happen when she got to Lei’s actual house.

"Hey! You made it!"

Lei's voice betrayed a hint of uncertainty, though her face showed nothing but genuine affection for the white haired girl in front of her. She ran a hand through Summer's hair before closing in for a brief hug.

"You all set?" Lei asked.

"Of course. Which gate are we heading out of?" asked Summer as she fumbled around trying to look at her ticket while balancing her bag on one shoulder.

"Oh, it's gate 13. It's just past the security checkpoint a ways down there." Lei gestured over her shoulder. "Shall we?"

"Uh, alright." she said as Lei marched them off into the crowded hallway. They past mothers soothing crying children, elderly couples off to tropical vacations, husbands greeting their wives after returning from buisness trips. Lei loved places like this, all the energy's floating around left her feeling envigorated. All thier molecules bouncing around in the rush of frantic activity.

"H-hey! Slow down! You act like you own the whole airport." Summer said with a hint of a smile.

"Oh...s-sorry. I didn't realize I was going so fast." There was a noticeable hint of something in her voice, although Summer couldn't quite place what it was. Some sort of apprehension? Normally she could tell what people were trying to hide form her, but she couldn't quite figure out what was going on in Lei's head.

"You all right, Lei?"

"Hmm? Oh, yeah...I'm alright. Why?" It was obvious that she was dodging something, that was certain.

"What is it? You know you can't lie to me"

"I-it's nothing...really"

"Alright, if you're sure..." It was a bit unlike Summer to just let it hang. Normaly she'd browbeat it out of whomever was trying to hide something from her ( :P take that! ). She decided to let it drop for now as they made their way to the metal detectors.

Ennnt! Summer face palmed mentally. Great, perfect.

"Step off to the side Miss." The fat security director asked.

Summer looked at him with disdain, "Do you have any metal objects on-" he was cut off, "On my person?" Summer answered, "no."

The guy coughed and took out the wand. Summer tilted her head. Ennnt! She looked back and saw Li shake her head and move off to the side. She pinched the bridge of her nose.

"Miss, are you..." He looked at Summer's mid section, "Never mind."

She sighed, "No I don't have a belt on, no I don't have any metal objects on me, I dropped my change in the doggy bowl you guys gave me and my bags not carrying anything illegal."

The magic wand was going berserk as he moved it around Summer's person. He looked at her annoyed now, thinking she was lying her ass off.

"Your ID please?"

Summer reached into her pocket and pulled it out, she handed it to him with a matter of fact look. His eyes grew big and it dawned on him.

"Hero License, security clearance of 37." He looked at her over it and lowered it.

"Can I have that back now?" Summer asked.

She snatched it from his grasp, stuffed it back in her pocket and walked past him. She walked over to Li, who had just gotten done explaining that she was a hero and had a license.

"Got your bag for you Babe." Summer said hefting her bag to her.

Li took it in hand, Summer pulled hers over her shoulder. They held hands and took a pair of seats waiting for the plane to come in. 40 minutes, a line, and two seats next to each other, Summer and Li were in the plane. Summer leaned back and relaxed again.

"How many hours is the flight?" Summer asked for the fourth time.

"3, maybe 3 and a half hours." Li answered.

"And me without my MP3 player. Oh wait, I'm not a music listener." said Summer sarcastically.

Li smiled and grabbed her hand, "Relax, what could go wrong?"

---

The plane rocked, the baby wailed at the top of its lungs. Summer slumped her head and Li smiled sympathetically. She smiled back but inside she really just wanted to get off the plane or be like Mimi and tune everything to a frequency and mute it. She snuggled up to Li and closed her eyes.

---

Summer woke up from her nap, Li's head was on hers. The plane was taxiing to the gateway. She heard Li groan and scratch her head lifting her head up. Summer yawned tasting that gross nap mouth. Thank god she got to sleep a bit and not deal with that little kid screaming anymore.

---

Summer and Li stepped out of the tunnel and into Los Angeles International Airport. The sights, the sounds and the people were everywhere. Bustling with as many strange people and bursting with culture, it's like the Airport just changed its decor.

"You see your parents anywhere?" Summer whispered to Li.

Lei's eyes scanned the crowded terminal, looking for a familiar glow amongst the energies flying every which way. It wasn't long before they settled upon the one she was looking for. A small smile crept up on her mouth as she grabbed Summer by the arm.

"There he is. You ready?"

Summer didn't even have time to respond before she felt her body suddenly become light as air. She felt a strange surging sensation followed by a slight impact in the area of her chest. Her head realing from the sudden change in location, it took her a few seconds to reorient herself.

"Damn-it all.....I told you to warn me before you do that Lei!" she shouted as her stomach started doing little backflips.

"S-sorry baby, I forgot..." Lei grinned with with a mockingly appologetic look on her face. "Summer, I'd like you to meet Jeeves. Our driver."

Summer's finally noticed the man standing before them. Black suit, black polished shoes, black tie on a white dress shirt, black sunglasses, and a pair of black fingerless driving gloves. Of average height and build, he was the kind of man you normally wouldn't look twice at. Not handsome, but not ugly. The kind of man that would be able to blend into any crowd.

"Mistress Li-Mei, very good to see you again. And this must be Miss Summer?" Even his voice was totally unremarkable. " And I'm not just the family driver, I'm also Mistress Li-Mei's personal bodyguard."

"D-driver? Bodyguard?!" Summer's head was reeling even more from this turn of events. She looked at Lei with a sudden realization that her lover was not all that she seemed.

"Jeeves, stop calling me that!" Lei said with her hands planted on her hips in mock indignation.

"As you wish Miss Lei." His smile betrayed a genuine, almost familial fondness for the tall girl before him. " Are we ready to go then? May I take your bag Miss Summer?"

"Huh? Oh, thanks." she replied handing over her things. They made thier way out of the airport and to a waiting limo with a gold "C-J" inlayed on the door. Jeeves set their bags down as he opened the door for them before popping the trunk to put them away. He took his seat behind the wheel and soon they were off. " Better make yourselves comfortable ladies, we have quite a long drive ahead of us. There's a TV with pleanty of movies, and a fully stocked fridge if you're hungry or thirsty."

Summer's looked at Lei who hadn't said anything to her in the past ten minutes. Her face an unreadable mask behind her softly glowing eyes.
