Going Forward and Again

The buzzer sounded like a scream in the room. Kristen bolted upright, looking around in confusion and fright.
It didn’t matter how many times she had heard that familiar, disturbing sound that woke her from her sleep; it was loud, it was obnoxious, it sounded like some woman from a cheesy horror movie meeting an untimely end to the axe murderer that everyone ELSE knew was behind door number two, but she was apparently dumb enough to still open that door.
She slammed her hand down on the snooze button, her normally cheerful expression currently being occupied by a scowl. She shivered, looking around the small quad. Tamesis was already up and moving around, pulling on her clothes and primping in the mirror. It seemed odd that she’d be spending so much time on her appearance; Kristen knew just about everything that WAS her roommate was ice, including her hair. The fact she was even moving seemed odd; but, as Kristen had to remind herself, she HAD seen some VERY strange things since arriving in Paragon City.
Continuing her look around the room, she was reminded of just how odd the city and the school she now called home were. Almost completely curled up like Sprinkles would do back at home, the girl she only knew as “Faster” was still sleeping soundly, her cat tail twitching every now and then as it peeked from under her covers. And opposite from her, Sandy was rubbing her eyes. There was a faint sound, like a few tiny pebbles or beads falling onto the tile floor under her bed as her legs slowly swung out and over the edge of the mattress with a creaking noise that seemed to linger, even as the movement stopped.
That’s when it all seemed wrong. Kristen turned to look at Tamesis again. Her hand was up near her eye, and she stared, unblinking and unmoving into the mirror. Kristen reached to the small Tupperware container she had overturned next to her bed to act as a small nightstand, groping for her huge glasses and putting them on.
Tamesis was a dull, metallic grey color. Sandy a pale marble color. Faster a mixture of light and dark greys. She looked down at her royal purple comforter; black.
Kristen took a deep breath, quickly looking around her world in its entire monochromatic splendor. She wasn’t panicked; in fact, she was quite accustomed to this routine now. She knew what it meant; now she just needed to figure out when she was. She reached down under her covers, the movement a struggle as she tried moving the object that was frozen in time and space. Her fingers reached and searched, then finally found their target and pressed. A small series of beeps sounded, and then a faint light lit underneath the black blanket.
She slowly pulled herself out of bed, walking around her statuesque roommates toward her desk. She heaved the chair out from under it, sitting down as she tugged and fought with the desk drawer to open it.
“Note to self; leave this ON the desk…” she thought, reaching into the drawer and heaving a bit. She pulled out a small device, not much bigger than the cell phone on her desk it was now set next to. She pressed a button, then again, much harder. The screen lit up.

She smirked a little. She picked up the pencil that was laying on the desk, twisting it upright with her other hand. Slowly, she began to write on the blank piece of notebook paper that was on the desk in front of her. When she finished, she set it back down, then looked back at her friends.
Tamesis’s hand had moved up to the frozen mass that resembled her hair now, and her mouth looked like it was starting to go on a downhill ride to a frown. Sandy was leaning forward, her weight starting to distribute to her legs and feet instead of the bed as she started her rise upwards. Faster was still asleep, her head caught as it started turning away from the “hustle and bustle” of the center of the room. Kristen giggled…
