Oh my god, oh my god, oh my goooooood," Nennya moaned, stopping on the trail, finding a nearby tree to lean against, and unloading her pack. "Wait up, the baby is crying again." She pulled the six pounds of dead weight out of its little comfy niche, swaddled in her long johns. She started rocking it in one arm, searching through the metallic key-nubs with the other. She pressed the one labeled 'bottle' to the soft plastic lips, patted the back, supported the floppy jointed head. Randy, nearest her, looked on amused, while the others shipped their burdens and Mr. Norris began an impromptu lecture on local flora. Raff listened attentively, his ears twitching from time to time. The slightly tinny, realistic wailing continued. "Eat, you monster," Nennya said, scowling at the doll. She looked up at Randy. "Why the hell does it cry with me and with YOU it was all quiet and good?"

"I've got maternal instincts," said Randy, smugly. Nennya blew a squirt of air between her lips, fluffing up her sweaty bangs. The baby continued to cry. She started to 'comfort,' pressing another button against the doll's back as she simulated 'burping' and 'rocking.' "Oh my god, this sucks."

"Try the diaper," Randy said, helpfully. Nennya unswaddled, changed the diaper, and reswaddled the infant. She was interested to note that the dolls were anatomically correct, and they'd gotten a girl. A loud girl. An unhappy girl. She wouldn't stop crying.

"I can't make it quit!" she said in desperation, rocking the baby again, trying to lull it quiet. Fed again. Rocked again.

"Miss Drixxen, are you abusing the baby?" asked Mr. Norris, exhausting his momentary lecture and wandering back to Nennya's tree. "Here." He took the plastic infant from her arms, took the key ring, and began attempting to quiet the infant.

Ten minutes later, he gave the infant back. "You'll just have to walk with her," he said. "We can't afford to waste daylight. Miles to go!"

Nennya shook the sweat out of her bandanna and tied it back on her head. Why did this have to happen on MY watch? she wondered. She slugged her pack back on and picked up the baby again. "Randy, a little help?" Using her flannel t-shirt, Nennya and Randy jerry-rigged a harness that held the baby firmly against her chest. It still continued to cry.

Hiking wasn't so bad, and hiking with the doll's dead weight wasn't so bad either, but having it crying in her ear made her unhappy. You're not even REAL, you stupid thing, she thought. An hour passed, then two.

"Let me take her," said Mana Cannon, suddenly.

Nennya stopped, and handed the electric baby over.

The crying stopped.

"She likes you, Raff," said Gabe, with a smile.

That's not supposed to happen," Nennya murmured to Randy. "He doesn't even have the keys. That's pretty strange to me." She walked over and slung the lanyard over Raphael's neck.

"Oh, thank goodness," said Mr. Norris, rubbing a fresh coat of sunscreen on his cheeks. "I can hear myself think now."

"It's not dead, is it?" Gabe said quietly to Raphael. "Only, we'll lose massive points if you've shorted it out or something."

"She's fine," said Mana, his voice unusually curt. He loaded the baby up in a makeshift carry-sling and pointed down trail. "Let us go. I can carry the baby, for now."
