The Gift of Flight

Flickering lights flew by the window of the train lighting up Eshva’s bright red eyes. Her arms sat crossed as she looked at the many ad’s on the inside of the train. The train was mostly empty a few passengers here and there. Her eyes gazed upon a man that seemed a little to fixed upon staring at her, she was making a point to not stare back at him.. After a few moments she gave up and looked at the man who apparently decided to keep staring. She studied him briefly. His thick square framed glasses sat silly upon his narrow nose, his blond hair was neatly parted and combed from the side, he wore a odd dark green suit, he was fairly thin figured and probably in his late 30’s. She often wondered if she would ever get use to people staring at her but with a heavy sigh she uncrossed her arms and leans a bit forward at the man with a raised eyebrow. The man adjusted his glasses and with a smirk he spoke at her.
“Sorry, I don’t mean to stare.. It’s just that mutants amaze me. Do you fly?”
Eshva slightly snapped back at the man.
“No. I know people that can.”
“Do you want to?”
“Not really.”
“Pitty.”
Eshva sat up a bit. “What?”
The man sat back up and seemly mocked her by turning his head to the side. He’d sparked her interest and he knew it.
“Pitty you don’t want to fly”
“Why is it a pitty?”
The man lit up as an ice blue eyes sparkled with excitement.
“Because, my dear. I have the means to allow it! Mind you.. its still in some testing stages.. Never the less I am sure it will work!”
Eshva critically looked at the overexcited man.
“Are you inventing a new jet pack? I had one really bad experience with those, kind of burnt my skin….”
The man laughed and shook his head no. He leaned in and waved her to come closer.
“Better. No jet’s required.” He paused and he grinned showing off an beautiful smile. “I’m inventing wings”
Eshva blinked. The man grinned wider as he continued to share his excitement.
“You could fly like a bird! They’re silent, light and powerful! We would have to size you of course..”
Eshva cut him off.
“Size me? I didn’t agree to get them! I don’t even know you.”
The stood up and offered a warm hand for a shake.
“ I’m Professor Dumke, I work for Freedom Corps inventing new gadgets for them to use in the mighty fight against the Aranchos!”
Eshva carefully took the Professor Dumke’s hand and he shook it briskly. Where in he promptly sat down beside her and grinned.
“You my dear?”
Eshva wasn’t quite sure what to think. Debating if the Dumke was a loony or just a very excitable man.
“I’m Eshva Dybbuk. I go to St. Joseph school.”
“Ah ha! I knew it! You look like an intelligent young lady! Is that a University?”
“Um…. No… It’s a high school..”
“What! You look just a little too old for high school! You must be what… 23 -24..”
Eshva scowled. The very, first time some one pegged her as older then what she was. And she suddenly related to the women that hated being aged.
“I’m.. 18.”
“Oh! So you must be graduating soon then?”
“Um.. no.. I’m in my first year..”
Dumke looked at the girl oddly his extremely light blue eyes hidden behind the thick frames seemed to show his mood better then Eshva’s color changing eyes. She smirked and waved her hand
“Long story…”
With an over exaggerated nod, Dumke placed an hand to his chin contemplating the things that might have gone on in her life. Suddenly with a brisk head shake he got back on to topic.
“Soo… Do you wanna try ‘em?” He nudged the girl in a heeeeeeeey fashion using his shoulder; Eshva was now debating the man’s age. Eshva turned her head at him with an eyebrow raised and an typical; oh dear look. With spotting the look that the young girl was giving him he quickly sat up straight and put his head down as if he was sulking.
“Sorry.. I don’t get out much.”
Eshva couldn’t help but smile at the childish antics of the professor. He lifted a finger to adjust his glasses so that they might not fall off his face. A giggle found its way out of her mouth which triggered Dumke to look up at her smiling face. She nodded at Professor Dumke who returned with a confused look. She rolled her red eyes and spoke.
“I’ll try them. It would be neat to fly.”
“Awsome!”
Dumke lit up and almost jumped out of his seat. With a quick movement of his wrist he pulled out his business card and presented it to the girl.
“That’s where I’ll be when you wanna come get sized. I’ll see you tonight!”
The train came to a stop just then and the doors open as she was still puzzling over the card the voice sounded “Atlas Park.” Eshva jumped to her feet and waved at the professor. The train cart started to move away as she spotted something on the business card and spun around to see the professor waving at her with a warm smile. She looked down at the card again and with a warm smile she placed it in her pocket. God bless and be safe.
