Screaming Mimi

Hey there!

My name is Mimi VanBuren, and I'm a Junior at St Joe's.

I've never really fit in anywhere, but at least at Saint Joseph School I am allowed to be different. My sonic powers manifested when I was eleven, and my parents, who were totally normal, well, they freaked. The next year and a half was hard for everybody. Luckily, a scout for SJS found me and contacted my family just after my thirteenth birthday. The rest is history!

I work on the yearbook, and I'm in the art club. I would go out for drama, except I said I wouldn't die my hair back to brown and so that didn't go so well. Some of my friends want me to go out for the pep squad, but there is no way I'm putting on a letter-sweater and waving pom-poms around. I'd rather go out for the field hockey team than cheer for it.

Generally, I'm a pretty easygoing girl, but I'm a tad sarcastic. I make it my business to know almost everyone at Saint Joe's and I'm always there to try to help out new students... Goodness knows I needed help when I first got here!

I had a lot of trouble when I first came to SJS. I resented being taken from my home, my friends, everything, just because I had these abilities. So I did what kids do: I rebelled. I broke all the plates in the dining hall with my powers (yes, yes, you can thank me for the awful Lexan plates and cups we have now, and yes, they used to be nicer). I disrupted the PA system. I did whatever I could to try to get thrown out of SJS, because I thought that if I left the school, I could get my life back.

What can I say? I was thirteen...

Anyway, that's when Sister Moltar laid the big, soft fist of justice down on me. I don't really feel like talking about it. Let's just say she showed me things that straightened me out. She exposed me to things that have stayed with me through the last three years. And I must admit, I never looked back.

So now here I am, still a little bitter deep down, but I get to roam the city and venge all over the Hellions, so it's been a pretty good trade. Plus, my temper is waaay more under control.
Spoiler: Original In-Game Bio
Cutting class. Rocking out. Fighting crime. It's all in a day's work to the young heroine called Screaming Mimi. This Catholic-school spitfire has a powerful temper and a set of pipes to match! When her sonic powers manifested in her early teens, Mimi found herself isolated by friends and family. Unable to fully control her powers, she was sent to Saint Joseph School after she accidentally shattered all the windows of a shopping mall, causing dozens of injuries. Now, three years later, she has grown out of her rebellious phase (almost), and takes to the streets of Paragon City to fight against injustice. "Think of me as a Catholic schoolgirl-gone-bad-gone-good."
Spoiler: Updated In-Game Bio
When her sonic powers first manifested at the age of eleven, Mimi VanBuren found herself in a lot of trouble very quickly: every gleeful laugh, outburst of anger, or cry of pain could shatter windows and hurt innocent people. Frightened and ashamed, her family withdrew her from school and kept her away from her childhood friends.

After months of isolation, Mimi developed a spiteful rebellious streak and tried to run away from home several times, with each attempt escalating the damage she would cause. By the time she was thirteen, the PPD’s file on her was given over to Freedom Corps.

Luckily for Mimi, a recruiter for Saint Joseph School learned of her and contacted her family. Though she was still angry, Mimi found herself in awe of the super-powered students who welcomed her into her new family at Saint Joe’s.

Now, years later, she’s grown out of her rebellious phase—almost—and between classes, takes to the streets of Paragon City to fight against injustice.

OOC 2006 Character Update

Mimi has been through some real issues in the past few months. I'll try to talk about them in order of the impact it has had upon her, not in chronological order.

The arrival of Stasis Kiss has thrown Mimi's world upside down. Stasis, and the formation of her "fan club," have taken over so much of what Mimi once had. Boys who use to flirt with her just started standing in line to flirt with Stasis instead. So Mimi has been quietly trying to hurt Stasis, and badly. If she really thought about it, she feels awful that she bears such petty malice. But she tries hard not to think about it. Also, Mimi has pulled away socially and is currently a little bit of a wallflower. This really came about because she got into a public disagreement with Stasis over November and suddenly found that everyone had taken Stasis' side.

Oh, yeah: November. Mimi is simply in knots over her old friend. Bell has been growing irrational and hurtful, and Mimi has found herself in the middle of a conflict between Bell and Moth, who is her roommate. She cannot side with either of them because she cares for both. But November has been pushing harder and harder, and soon, Mimi will snap.

Tawney's absences have also had their impact. Her bestest friend has been reclusive, just as Mimi herself has become, and so she hasn't actually laid eyes on Tawney for a while. The same can be said for Hedge, which of course has bred a feeling of being part of some "old guard" which no longer exists.

She is still mostly pleasant, but unconsciously finds herself taking sides. If she is introduced to "a friend of Stasis'," she finds herself feeling aggressive. Though she's trying hard to find a balance for herself, she is slowly failing.

I think that's all for now. As always, feel free to ask for clarification.

OOC 2007 Update, Part Two

Oh, what a wild year for Mimi. Again, I'll mention things here in order of importance, not chronologically.

The big news: Mimi has been suspended for three months for her "poor leadership skills" surrounding the anti-homecoming dance. While Yulia Darek (Moth) is already back on campus after a two-week suspension, Mimi is riding out the storm in Providence with her parents, who are disappointed to say the least. Mimi herself is more upset about everyone else's reactions than she is about actually getting caught or suspended. It felt good to break a few rules, and in some ways, it felt good to get caught. Plus, it gives Mimi time to do some songwriting.

Which of course, leads to The Tartans. The band finally got off the ground this year, and presently consists of Mimi, Rudi "r00d" MacKenzie, Katie Barnes, and Lara "Click" Linell. They've not yet had a paying gig (mostly open mic and then of course the anti-homecoming party) but in the coming year, we'll be seeing more and more from them... including a search for a new bassist. Mimi will be giving up her mediocre bass-playing skills in favor of just focusing on vocals. Look for Yulia to appear in a couple songs, playing her violin.

Though it would have been #1 on the list a few months back, the Second Rikti Invasion doesn't dominate Mimi's every waking thought anymore. Thank goodness! Turns out Mimi's wounds from the first invasion are still tender. And kinda irrational. Mimi signed on with the CVC for a while, but grew dissatisfied with all the ranks and saluting and official procedure-- she was interested in kicking the Rikti off Earth, not getting merit badges. Luckily (?) her suspension from SJS has brought her service with the CVC to a crashing halt, as it violates the CVC by-laws concerning academic performance. Mimi is still on the lookout for the Dirty Rikti Spy (also known as Amy Davis or Violin) and still has trouble-- a lot of trouble-- with the "aww, c'mon, she may be Rikti but certainly we can trust her" attitude from a lot of other students concerning Amy. However, it's boiled down more to a leave me alone, I'll leave you alone relationship, with one caveat: Mimi has been pretty honest with Amy that she's watching. Mimi truly believes it's only a matter of time before Amy changes her name to have lots of apostrophes in it. Even in the administration doesn't see it, even if the other students don't see it, Mimi knows the Rikti hybrid girl is a time bomb.

I'd put November's return in this update, but Mimi is suspended, and actually has no idea Bell has come back to the States. When Mimi returns, though, I'm sure Moth will tell her. That'll be way fun.

I think that's the big points. If I think of more, you can bet I'll add them in!

I realize that much time has passed since this initial discussion by Mimi....

"Some of my friends want me to go out for the pep squad, but there is no way I'm putting on a letter-sweater and waving pom-poms around. I'd rather go out for the field hockey team than cheer for it." Said Mimi.

Any plans on amending that statement, Meems? I have a pretty hot little cheersquad uniform here and..oh look!!...it's just your size!!

Or maybe that's Jasmine's...man....these tailors suck.
