A Night to Remember
SJS Prom a Wonderland
By LESLIE TEAGUE, Lifestyles Reporter

Over 75 students attended the Saint Joseph School prom this year, which was held in the ballroom of the Steel Canyon Palace Grand Hotel on Saturday night. Entertained by the masterful stylings of DJ Jules, the students and faculty of SJS saw in each other in a new way: tuxedos and formal dresses. Although the prom was scheduled for only three hours at the ballroom, this year was also unusual in that there was a sanctioned and chaperoned after-party at the popular Shenanigan's restaurant and it's adjoining theater, which showed Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as a special treat.

With the end of the third quarter rapidly approaching, the campus will soon be mostly empty as many students will be headed home for the summer. So it was also a tearful night of remembering the past year and saying goodbye, with students clumped in groups to reminisce. Sharing stories of struggle and joy, students prepared to say goodbye to another year.

It is the goal of all journalists to be as accurate as possible. But on occasion, mistakes are made. In an effort to provide the most thorough reporting possible, the Flier editorial team would like to correct an error in yesterday's issue.

In the article entitled, "A Night To Remember," the photo caption incorrectly identifies Chloe Whittaker in the back row. While our field reporter's notes do in fact identify the girl as Chloe Whittaker, we have received several emails and phone calls from people know know Miss Whittaker, and they have assured the editorial team that the girl is misidentified. We at the Flier are currently trying to identify the young woman pictured; if you have any information, please email the editorial team.

The Flier apologizes for this error.
Spoiler: Huh? What?
Chloe does not appear physically the same in photographs as in person-- in fact, she does not appear the same way to different people! Though Chloe is pictured, anyone reading the Flier would not see the girl they recognize as Chloe. The photo shows a young woman with straight brown hair past her shoulder, sea green eyes and more than her fair share of freckles. She's skinny, but in a lanky "hasn't grown into her body" way.

Student Spotlight

Hello fellow Fliers. For those of you that do not know me and for those that do know me my name is Yuki and I have the unique privilege of getting to know you the student body a little better. Every couple of weeks I’m going to interview one lucky student to let everyone get to know that student just a little better. Welcome to the Student Spotlight.

The other day I got a chance to sit down with one of our new students, Eugene Kalderash. He asked me to meet him in Perez Park. I had to use a GPS unit just to find the meeting location, but with little effort I was able to find him. Wavver was sitting on a bench on a dock over looking the swampy looking still water. He was wearing a brown light weight jacket with a tattered looking scarf, blue jeans and combat boots. I sat down and we started to talk.

Your name is Eugene, but you go by Wavver. What's the story with that name?

Wavver is Romanian for forest.

And... that's the story?

Pretty much. I like Wavver 'cause I picked it. Eugene's such a lame name. I wish I had a cooler first name, but I don't.

So it's Romanian? Is that where you're from?

Nah, Mississippi. But we moved a lot. I have a big family and they don't like stayin' in one spot too long.

What, are they in the witness protection or something?

(no answer)

Ok, moving right along. So, I want to ask about what everyone seems to be talking about. What's up with the hair?

(Laughing) I didn't think I'd be known for my hair. It's just my style. My hair is naturally curly and I wanted to do somethin' a lil' different then everyone in my ol' school. It was an easy fit. It don' take much to get it to stand up and it's easy to take care of. Now my family didn't much care for it at first. They were mad I cut it. I use'ta have hair all the way down my back. Most of my family keeps there hair long. Even my uncle Carol who's baldin'. It's kinda scary lookin', the way he combs it over and pretends he still has as much hair as he did when he was my age.

Wow, your uncle sounds like a character.

Yes ma’am. Most of my family are characters. Some more then others.

You keep referring to your family instead of your parents why is that?

I have a big family and we stick together. We have to: most are paranoid about outsiders and keep close. I do have family all over the place but my core family is back in Mississippi. I live with my Mamă and Tată , but next door and around the corner are my cousins, uncles, aunts, and my bunică and bunic live down the street. We are all very close. The parties and festivals are great.

Sounds like a great family. Mamă, tată, bunică-- what language was that?

humm... Romanian. (Waving hands) But I ain’t from there. I was born here is the good ol' USA. I’m second generation American born. My Bunică and Bunic, that's my grandparents, they never learned English -- well, more like they refused. So we still use some of the old words. I honestly can't speak a lick of Romna. I'm such a disappointment. (laughing)

From the sound of things I have to ask. Are you a gypsy?

We prefer Romna.

So should I check to see if my money's still in my wallet?

Maybe. You never know.

I'll check later. Any hobbies?

I am proud of my comic book collection. I've been collecting ‘em for 'bout four years now.

What's your favorite?

X-Men by far. I love Gambit.

Did you like the movies?

Absolutely not! They sucked. I mean the effects were cool, but where was Gambit?

I get it, you like Gambit. Anything else you like to do?

I like to grow plants. I like vining plants and flowering ones the best. I just started to learn how to cut bonsai. I've always liked bein' out in the wild and watchin' Mother Nature do her magic.

That leads me to my next question. What are your powers?

I can't give away all my secrets.

Aw, come on. Just between you and me... and anyone reading this?

Well, since you put it that way. I have a gift for Romna magic. My bunică says it's in my blood. I can cast easy spells and make things happen. Like my main power is with plants. I can summon them to grew fast and take action. But I also can read people. You know like palmistry, tarot, and curses.

So you could tell me what my future is?

Well, for the most part. I still like to believe we are all in charge of our own destinies. So it's more of a possible future then a written in stone kinda future.

That's a clever way of saying you might get it wrong.

Ah, you got me. Lucky you're too cute to curse.

What's the best part of Saint Joes so far?

Best? I don't know. The people are nice and really fun to watch. Watching everyone with crazy powers is a hoot. I've never seen so my powers in one place. I guess I'm a people watcher. I like to study others. See what they like and how they interact with each other.

Wow, that doesn't sound creepy at all.

No. No. I'm not a stalker or nothin'. Jus' think people are interstin'. Unique, everyone acts a little bit different but so much the same. Its jus' kinda' cool. You know?

Yeah, I am cool. People tell me all the time. So anything else you think we should all know about you?

Nothin' I can think of. I don't have many friends here so it'd be nice to make some. I'm good at gettin' things. So, if anyone needs any hard to find trinkets I'm your man.

Well, thanks for letting us all know a little more about you.

It was my pleasure Ms. Yuki.

Student Spotlight
-Brianna Landers

This week we are in the Cup and Cowl Coffeehouse, just off the campus of Rhode Island State University. I’ve been given a chance to sit down with one of our schools most famous or infamous students Brianna Landers. Love her or hate her she has helped shape popularity and what is cool this year at St Joseph. It is not just a statement but a fact that if you don’t know who Bri is then you have been living under a rock.

I showed up at the coffeehouse early so that I could get a decent seat. This college hang out is very popular and is known to reach capacity with it’s array of independent bands and open mic nights. I find an out of the way couch to sit. It has a good view of the stage and an artistic coffee table perfect for my notes. I order a house coffee and take in the atmosphere as I wait for Bri to show. There’s a low roar of chatter not unlike the cafeteria at school. The indie music fills any moments of calm. I can see why Bri would want to meet me here. Looking around you can tell anyone who is anyone or wants to be someone comes here. It is the essence of cool.

When Brianna walks in I’m able to get her attention with a wave. She give a smile that should be trademarked and sits down on the couch next to mine. I put my cup of joe down.

Hi Brianna thank you for meeting me. Your name is Brianna Landers have you ever gone by any other names? Like a super name?

Well, at Seacliff, we had codenames assigned to us. Mine was Ruby Six. I don't use it much anymore.

Was there any meaning to that name?

Our team for combat maneuvers classes was Ruby. I was the sixth member. Not much more exciting than that.

I see. Alright then, lets switch gears for a moment. You grew up in Boston. What was that like?

Amazing. My family is among the "movers and shakers" I guess you would call it. I was a page at a cotillion for the mayor's daughter when I was 7. I went to one of the finest schools in Massachusetts.

That is amazing. Any favorite memories growing up there?

Ice cream. My father would take me and my friends to Aunt Lydia's Famous Ice Cream Parlor in the summer. I actually ruined my first dress with a rogue scoop of double chocolate chip.

That’s a great memory. You must have been a hand full for you parents.

You have no idea. I mean, I wasn't wild or troublesome. Just, a late-bloomer, …and klutzy. That cotillion? Also my last for a little while.

What is best band?

Jonas Brothers, pop mostly.

You mentioned seacliff. What was that like going to school there? Did you like it?

Most of the time, yeah. It was a top notch school for metas. Very exclusive, and it had the finest facilities of any school you care to name, and Connor's Bay was just beautiful.

For those that may not understand the term can you explain what a meta is?

Oh, meta would be a person with extraordinary abilities. Someone who could be considered for enrollment at Saint Joe's. Only, Seacliff wouldn't have taken in as many as Saint Joe's does. There weren't many people there that just had a strange look to them. You know like they were just blue or something?

I see. So when the earthquake happened were you injured at all?

Oh, no. Not at all. I was on the other side of the school, thank God.

That’s good. So now you go to St Joes. Do you like it here?

Again, for the most part. I guess that's true of anywhere people go. There's good and bad. Having to start all over again at a new school was hard. But at the same time, I've made some really good friends here.

Any favorite parts of St. Joes?

My favorite? Cheerleading. Even with the squad the way it is, I still love it. It's my element.

In the short time you have been here you have made quite a name for your self. Your not just in the cheer squad you are Co Captain of the cheer squad. What is that like?

Yeah. That was actually my idea. I could tell that Franky was struggling, having no experience leading a squad before she was assigned this one. I went to the administration and volunteered my services to help her out. It's been... interesting. It's no secret that Franky and I clash… on many levels, but I like to think that we are both mature enough to put our differences aside to help out the squad, the team, and fans.

And yet working together you have designed an outstanding cheer squad. Where do you come up with the routines the squad perform?

Experience. I was the head cheerleader at Seacliff for a year and on the squad for a year before that. I also watch any cheer competitions and dance performances I can catch to look for inspiration.

What is a movie you have seen more than 3 times?

Legally Blonde

You were voted homecoming queen. Any plans this years homecoming?

Well, I plan to cheer the Flyers to an astounding victory. I plan to shop around for the perfect outfit to impress Jem and make him speechless. Which is not as easy as it sounds, by the way, and I plan to go to the dance. Anything beyond that is, I'm sad to say, not in my hands. Nominations for court are up to the team.

Prada or Kalvin?

Prada

Any plans after school? College, career, anything decided?

Yes, actually. I want to go to college to get a degree in counseling. Maybe even go for psychology or psychiatry. I want to counsel teenage and college age girls. There's a lot to deal with in such a short time. It helps to have someone to talk to. Someone who knows what you're talking about because they've been there. I know it's not as... obvious as people might think for me. I know they think "actress" or "model". But I don't think I'd be able to cut it in show-biz. I like being in control too much.

That’s a great field. What is your biggest dream?

My own clinic or private practice.

I know this might be a sensitive subject for you but I found some articles in a Boston newspaper online. You had to go to court there recently, is that correct?

Yes. I did.

There has been a few rumors but I don’t think anyone has the real truth. Can you explain a little what that was about?

According to the courts, nothing happened. I remember it differently. There was a guy. We were dating. We went to a party and he... drugged me and attacked me. I was afraid of him so I didn't tell anyone until recently. That would be the part of Seacliff I didn't like.

That must have been an absolute nightmare. Is there anything you would like to say to other girls that may find then self’s in a similar place or advice you want to give all women?

Fight. With all you have.

On a more pleasant side you are part of many activities at SJS. Is there any thing we can expect from you and these groups this year?

Well, with the cheer squad shaping up like it is and the time commitment that takes, I think I'll mostly be focusing on that.

Okay, final question. Is there ever a good time to wear crocs?

No.

Well, Brianna I want to thank you for taking the time to meet with me and be in our student spotlight.

Thank you for letting me take up your time.
