While her childhood was never cruel, the curiosity and questions about why she was different from her family and classmates built up a shell around Makena. By the time she was in elementary school, Makena had become a wallflower with few friends. This continued through middle school and into junior high where it manifested into a weakness against peer pressure. Wanting badly to fit in, Kena tried to follow the trends as best she could but lacked the confidence and self-assuredness to initiate many conversations or friendships. As a result, she stayed on the sidelines, easily looked over and quickly forgotten.
Her parents tried several things throughout Kena's childhood to boost her self esteem, including scouts and martial arts. The one thing that really stuck with her though is ballet. She began taking lessons at age five and while she isn't the best there is out there, she is very good.
Then about six months ago, a teacher called on Makena in English, her worst subject, and asked her to read a passage from the book. She quietly mumbled the words, keeping her eyes on the page, until the teacher told her to speak up so everyone could hear her. Makena's overwhelming shyness and fear of being laughed at or seen as different triggered something in her. She fell through her desk and the floor below her and landed in the hall one story down. A latent mutation had finally triggered and Makena could "phase" through objects.
Makena has been at SJS for a few months now, but she does tend to blend into the background. She's that girl that's always in the school halls, walking to class, hugging her books to her chest like they were armor and keeping her eyes on her feet. After several tests with GIFT it was discovered that Makena cannot phase through Impervium. They provided her with a couple mesh mats, one small one to carry with her and place on her seat in class and another larger one that fits under her mattress.
Right now, Makena is faced with a lot of uncertainty and questions. She has never felt the need to contact her biological parents but can't help but wonder if they possess abilities like her own. She has a very loose grip on her powers and still involuntarily falls through things if she becomes nervous or startled.
Some common knowledge about Makena:
- She is still taking ballet lessons. Currently she is attending Madame DeGarmo's Ballet Studio in Founders Falls.
- She is currently dating Damian "Dozer" Singleton and seems to be fairly relaxed and comfortable around him.
- From the moment she stepped on the SJS campus, she found a protective "big brother" figure in Darweshi Brown and trusts him above all others.
